National Junior Disability Championships
London team manager Yvonne Jacobs took a small but strong team up to Coventry for the National Junior Disability Athletics Championships. With all of the travelling athletes based at Lee Valley athletics centre. Dalian, Arron and Louie smith are currently under the watchful eye of Jacobs and compete for Enfield Haringey. Sprinter Scott Harvery is currently a student on the Barnet and Southgate Athletics programme, with Arron Wilkins looking to join him next year.
The London team had some fantastic performances and won 7 medals (3 gold and 4 silver) with their small team of just 4 Athletes. Finishing 10th overall, the team couldn’t compete with several regions that had over 40 athletes, but despite being small in numbers, the London athletes attracted quite a bit of attention with their performances, gaining considerable praise. This is only the 2nd year London have entered a team so it's still early days for Jacobs and her growing squad of athletes. She looks now to build on the performances from the 2 days but expresses the need for further support to devlop both the team and the London championships further.
The Enfield coach said: “I really hope these performances can help us in future to get some support and publicity to take a larger team from around London. We have already got a fantastic turnout at the London Championships, again in just 2 years we are up to 150 entrants, (A significantly higher turnout than some more established regions) I just need to find a way to translate this turnout into inspiring a larger number to represent London and participate at a national level.”
The London team manager continued: “Although it's a small team, they are all good athletes in regular training, capable of competing with the best in their categories, and I was hopeful of getting a few medals. We were 10th out of 11 regions last year, and we were aiming to improve on that, and encourage more to participate in future.”
All of the athletes did themselves and the capital proud, but Dalian Richmond won 3 gold’s and silver and was by far the stand out performer.
