A year to the day that will see the start of the London 2017 World Athletics championships, saw the launch of the first ever London Community games held by London Athletics (Regional body for England Athletics) at Mile End Stadium (Sunday 7th August).
The first athletics meeting of its kind offering activities and opportunities for young athletes to compete in a Quadkids competition, fun runners in a 2km and 5km, open track & field and relays for the club athletes, disability events, and corporate relays for more serious runners and groups.
The aim of the Community Games was to be inclusive to all and offer activities to groups of inactive or first timers to club runners and track & field athletes.
This event provided unique opportunities to engage with schools, competitive club athletes , corporate partners and the local community and kicked off with community 2km runs for budding runners under 14 years of age which was shortly followed by a 5km fun run finishing on the athletics track ! . The Quadkids events were up next with 55 Primary and secondary school children in action. Disability events linked to Special Olympics Great Britain started around midday with the open track events and club athletes now in attendance. The day's action came to a close with the London Athletics Trophy 4x1mile relay and sprint relays.
Tim Howells, Project manager for London Athletics said: “The first ever London Athletics Community Games, a pilot for what will hopefully become an annual event, was greatly received by everyone that took place. It was great to see the local community and local children taking part alongside seasoned athletes, and using the athletics track as a central hub for a variety of events from a 5km run, quad kids, Special Olympics and mainstream track events. Roll on 2017”
Natalie Kavanagh-Clarke ( Interim Area Manager) “The Run! Team, and sponsors have shown great support, I don’t know of a competition like this that offer’s such a range of activities from inactive to club level"
A big thank you goes out to all the volunteers and officials that made the event happen, to the team at Mile End from GLL for support at the track, to Vita Coca for the 5km fun run drinks and to New Balance for the relay Water Bottles in the goodie bags !
Feedback from some of the runners on social media showed what a great all round event it was...
