Highest placing for a Decade

Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club’s Jonathan Cornish produced the club’s best individual performance for more than a decade in the annual South of the Thames five miles team cross country race at picturesque Polesden Lacey in Bookham, Surrey, on Saturday, reports Tom Pollak.

Cornish finished fifth out of more than 300 runners at the end of the undulating one lap course in 26 minutes 42 seconds, just 42 seconds behind the winner. It was the best Hercules Wimbledon performance in the event since Dereje Kebede won the race in 2004 and Ian Horrocks finished fifth the following year.

With Joe Toomey 33rd in 29:37, Neil Fraser 47th in 30:28 and George Longworth 46th in 30:32, Hercules Wimbledon were sixth in the team contest out of 36 teams.

Hercules Wimbledon were also fourth in the eight-to-score team event for the Brent Shield with Rob Tuer 63rd in 31:22, Khalid Diaw 65th in 31:38 and Phil Glynn 71st in 31:46.
