Run Project Activator for Waltham Forest
My name is Shaun Medlen and I am the Run Athletics! Activator for the London Borough of Waltham Forest.
Bit about myself...I am an active athlete and Captain of the Men’s Team for Bexley Athletic Club and also a Level 2 Throws Coach. Athletics has been an integral part of my life for 16 years now and I am delighted to be working in the sport which has given me so much enjoyment and personal development over the years. My main event is Hammer, while also doing Shot and Discus when needed. Not bad for someone who started out as a 400m runner! Outside of athletics, I have a keen interest in music, travelling and social participation in other sports. I also have a BSc (Hons) and MA in the field of Sport Science and am a Level 2 qualified Gym Instructor.
I am relishing the opportunity to work in the sport that has given me so much over the years. It has helped to develop me as a person and as an individual within the sport. Over time, I have experienced different aspects and positions in athletics (athlete, coach, official and club committee member) and all these experiences have amounted to how I perceive the sport and how I feel it needs improvement. I intend to get people involved in all angles of athletics, from competing to volunteering, so they can have the same experiences I have had in my athletics life and obtain the same fulfilment I have had.
I am particularly excited to be working within one of the Olympic Host Boroughs, Waltham Forest. With such a massive event happening in 2012, it is imperative that athletics, as the best known of all the Olympic sports, grows and flourishes at grass roots level. That is where I come in and I cannot wait to help athletics grow within Waltham Forest, it’s already established clubs and any new groups that will be formed to promote athletics and fitness in an Olympic borough.
