Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club’s men’s runners warmed up for next Sunday’s South of England road relay championships at Crystal Palace with a quintet of male parkrun 5km winners on Saturday, writes Tom Pollak.
Leading the way was Jonathan Cornish who raced away from an 1194-strong field to win the Bushy Park event in 15 minutes 45 seconds finishing 12 seconds ahead of his Hercules Wimbledon team-mate Fred Slemeck who sliced 27 seconds off his previous best for the course which was set on his only previous appearance there almost five years ago in November 2012.
Claire Grima, who will lead the Hercules Wimbledon women’s team at Crystal Palace, posted the top age-graded performance in finishing 20th overall and first woman over the line in a women’s veterans over 40 course record of 17:50. Lower down the large field, Richard Clark was first veteran over 60 finisher in 20:39.
Richard McDowell headed home 25 Hercules Wimbledon runners as he led home 521 runners on Wimbledon Common in 17:22, 17 seconds clear of the runner-up. Felix Allen had an impressive run in finishing fourth. He was first over 45 veteran in a personal best of 17:51, slicing a 38 seconds off his previous best set in August 2013. Adam Harwood was fifth in 17:52, teenager Henry Silverstein eighth in 18:11 and over 40 veteran Andrew Davies eighth in 18:30. Richard Evans was first veteran over 55 in 18:37 posting the event’s top age-graded performance. Alex Binley was second woman in 20:08.
Jonny Earl, who was also warming up for Crystal Palace, beat almost 200 runners in the Kingston event winning by 72 seconds in a personal best of 16:31 slicing three seconds off his previous best set on his debut appearance in July. The fourth Hercules Wimbledon winner was Russell Price at Stamford Park, Staybridge, Greater Manchester, where he was making his debut.
